Words of the People has postponed our Oct. 20-22, 2023 Rematriation gathering due to insufficient funding. Our sponsors were not able to provide what they had projected; so, in addition to working on fundraising, we are making plans to reschedule the retreat, tentatively planning to host our writers and rematriation leaders in spring of 2024.

In lieu of the retreat this fall, there will events in Tulsa on Thursday, Oct. 19:

Writing workshop. 12-2:30 p.m. Philbrook Museum Gardens, in Karl Unnasch’s reclaimed log cabin “Slumgullion (The Venerate Outpost)” 2018. Cost: admission into Philbrook. Philbrook Museum is located at 2727 S Rockford Rd, Tulsa, OK 74114.

A generative creative writing workshop focused on techniques for writing in your ancestral indigenous language. Open to Native people currently enrolled in or otherwise learning their tribal language via their family or directly from the tribe. Reading and panel of tribal poets to follow from 7-9pm also on 10/19 (see below).

A gathering at Whitty Books focused on the development of tribally-grown poetics through panel and readings. The panel will discuss the experience of being an Osage poet/songwriter, then open things up for all to share poetry, songs and words at an open mic. All are invited to attend this gathering to share with Osages and allied poets and singers. There is also a livestream and you can register at the link below. This link is for the 7-9 p.m. event, but not for the workshop at Philbrook, which is in-person only.
